Key points

  • For unpaid rent, a Nevada landlord must serve a 7-day notice. You have until the end of the 7th court day to pay, move or file an answer with the justice court.
  • If the court orders an eviction, the constable posts the order within 24 hours. You can be locked out 24 to 36 hours later.
  • Clark County's Eviction Diversion Program gives tenants 62 and older, or on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for a disability, rent help and a lawyer. It has run in three justice courts since February 2, 2026.
  • At 60 and older, you can get free legal help. Call (702) 229-6596 in southern Nevada, or (775) 332-0606 in Washoe County.

If you're new to this, start with how housing help works. This page covers Nevada: eviction steps and deadlines, rent help by county, senior housing and free legal help. Other state offices are on Medicare help in Nevada.

Nevada's eviction clock is short. If a notice to pay rent or quit was just taped to your door, you have 7 court days to answer it. In the Las Vegas area, older tenants who answer on time can get rent help and a lawyer. Free legal help for people 60 and older is open statewide.

You may qualify for help if

  • You're behind on rent, or you got a 7-day notice or court papers.
  • You're 62 or older, or get SSI for a disability, and your case is in the Las Vegas, Henderson or North Las Vegas justice court.
  • You're 60 or older anywhere in Nevada, which opens free senior legal help.

Not sure you qualify? Apply anyway, because you don't need an eviction case to ask for rent help, Clark County says. If you would rather not do it alone, a Pair Team advocate can make the calls with you.

What happens after an eviction notice in Nevada?

After an eviction notice for unpaid rent, you have 7 court days to act, the Civil Law Self-Help Center says.

  1. The notice comes first. A constable, sheriff, process server or a lawyer's agent must serve a 7-day notice to pay rent or quit. If you pay by the week and moved in 45 days ago or less, it can be 4 days.
  2. Count court days. The day you got it, weekends and court holidays don't count.
  3. Act by the end of the 7th court day. Pay the rent, move, or file a tenant's answer at the justice court named on the notice. An answer gets you a hearing with a judge.
  4. Ask for more time if you need it. You can ask the court to pause the eviction for up to 10 days.
  5. If the court orders an eviction, the constable or sheriff posts it on your door within 24 hours. They can remove you 24 to 36 hours after that.

How does Clark County's Eviction Diversion Program work?

The Eviction Diversion Program helps tenants 62 and older, or on SSI for a disability, who face eviction for unpaid rent. It runs in the justice courts of Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas. To qualify, you must file a tenant answer before your notice runs out, Clark County says. Clark County Social Service can then help with rent, and a Legal Aid Center lawyer takes your case. It works in close to 90% of cases, the county says.

If you aren't in court yet, try Clark County's Eviction Prevention program. Once in a lifetime, it can pay up to 12 months of back rent and 3 months ahead. If someone at home lives on Social Security or a pension, ask about Fixed Income Rental Assistance.

How do I find senior or low-income housing in Nevada?

To find senior or low-income housing, start with NVHousingSearch.org, a free listing site the Nevada Housing Division pays for. You can also call 1-877-428-8844 on weekdays, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then get on the public housing and Section 8 lists where you live. In southern Nevada, apply to the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority online through RentCafe, or at 340 North 11th Street. In rural Nevada, Nevada Rural Housing runs Section 8. For open lists, see Las Vegas and Reno.

Your rights as a tenant in Nevada

  • Only a constable or sheriff can remove you, and only after a court order. If your landlord locks you out or cuts off water, power or cooling, file a fast complaint with the justice court.
  • Late fees are capped at 5% of your rent, and only after rent is 3 days late.
  • Your landlord can't refuse the rent in the notice just because they also want late fees or legal costs, state law says.
  • Rent increases need written notice, 60 days ahead for a monthly lease, Nevada law says.
  • No payback for complaints. A landlord can't evict you for reporting unsafe conditions to a government agency.

What a Pair Team advocate does

In Nevada, a call about rent often comes with a past-due power bill or a Medicaid renewal letter. This is what we do:

  • Help you file a tenant answer on time, and get you to senior legal help.
  • Apply with you for Clark County, Washoe County or Nevada Rural Housing rent help.
  • Help you get on housing authority lists and keep your contact details current.
  • Help with what usually comes with it: power bills, food benefits, Medicaid paperwork and rides.

An advocate is covered by Medicare if you qualify. It takes two minutes to find out.

Frequently asked questions

Does Nevada Medicaid pay rent?

Nevada Medicaid doesn't pay rent for people 65 and older living at home. If you need nursing home level care, its Frail Elderly waiver can pay for help that keeps you at home, like a case manager and meals, Nevada Medicaid says. For rent itself, use the programs in the table above, and see Medicaid home care in Nevada.

I missed the 7-day deadline. Is it too late?

It may not be too late, so call legal aid today. You can ask the court to pause the eviction for up to 10 days, even after an order. That's from the Civil Law Self-Help Center.

Someone is taking my money, and I might lose my home. Who can help?

If someone is taking your money, call Adult Protective Services: (702) 486-6930 in Clark County, or (888) 729-0571 anywhere else. The senior law programs also help with elder abuse and money taken from older adults.

Is there help with a security deposit?

Yes, there's help with a security deposit in some places. In Washoe County, call the Rental and Deposit Assistance Program at (775) 337-4427. Outside Clark and Washoe, Nevada Rural Housing has a security deposit program.

Free legal help under 60 comes from the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada at (702) 386-1070. Elsewhere, try Nevada Legal Services. The Civil Law Self-Help Center has free eviction forms.
