Not sure you qualify? Apply anyway, because DSS makes the call, and New York doesn't count your savings for the Medicare Savings Program. If you would rather not do it alone, a Pair Team advocate can help you in one call.

Where do I apply for Medicaid in Babylon?

If you're 65 or older and don't need long-term care, you can apply online at NY State of Health, the state says. If you need care at home, apply on paper with DSS. The county's ZIP code lookup sends every Babylon ZIP code, from Amityville to Wyandanch, to the Smithtown Center in Hauppauge.

In 2026, the income limit for one person is $1,836 a month. New York doesn't count the first $20, so you can have up to $1,856, plus $33,038 in savings. The same form checks you for the Medicare Savings Program, which can pay the $202.90 a month Medicare costs you. See Medicare and Medicaid together in New York.

For SNAP, the South West Center in Deer Park is the DSS office inside the town. DSS sorts SNAP cases by address and will send you on if needed.

What do Babylon's senior centers offer?

Babylon's four senior centers offer classes, health programs, games and trips on weekdays. Lunch is served daily at all four, and breakfast at Wyandanch and North Amityville. An advocate from the county Office for the Aging can meet you at any center, so book through the center. Staff also help with heating aid, Medicaid, SNAP and the state's IT-214 property tax credit form.

North Amityville also gives daily rides to and from the center, plus a store trip every two weeks. If you can't leave home, the centers refer you to Catholic Charities. It checks your needs and can sign you up for meals at home.

How do I get a ride to the doctor in Babylon?

Babylon's senior van takes residents 60 and older to medical visits inside the town, including physical therapy. It runs on weekday mornings, for visits from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. An 11 a.m. visit must end by 12:15 p.m. The town asks you to book a week ahead, and it needs at least three days' notice. The van also goes to the supermarket and the Social Security office in Babylon, for a suggested $1.00 a round trip.

With a disability, you can also ride the town's Services for the Disabled van to medical visits on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Sign up first, then call 631-893-1050 at least 72 hours ahead.

  • Medicaid rides are for people with Medicaid. Call MAS at 844-666-6270 at least three days before a routine visit.
  • SCAT is the county's shared van if a disability keeps you off the bus. Apply at 631-853-8333, and each trip costs $4.00.

Can Babylon help me fix up my home?

Babylon can help you fix up your home if you own it. At 60 and older, the Residential Repair Program does small repairs, painting and yard cleanup. You pay for materials, and the town does the work (631-789-3309).

For bigger jobs, the town's Home Repair Program gives low and moderate income homeowners a loan with no interest, up to $50,000. You repay it when you sell or transfer the home, or refinance it for cash. It can pay for a roof, heat, windows or changes for a disability. You must have lived in it for a year (631-957-3051).

The town's Housing Assistance Agency runs Section 8 and isn't taking new applications (631-893-1040). See housing help in New York.

Where can I get free food in Babylon?

The town's Pastor Roy S. Kirton Food Pantry gives food once a month to town residents. Go to 48 Cedar Road in Amityville on a Tuesday or Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and bring a valid ID.

Island Harvest gives a free Senior Food Box each month if you're 60 or older with income up to $1,995 a month. Pickup sites in the town change each month, so check Island Harvest's calendar or call 631-873-4775. From October 1, 2026, people 60 and older who live alone can make up to $2,660 a month and get SNAP. See SNAP for seniors in New York.

What a Pair Team advocate does

In Babylon, a call to us often starts with a Medicaid letter and no ride to the doctor. Here's what we do:

  • Apply for Medicaid with you, then call the Smithtown Center until there's an answer.
  • Book the town senior van early, or set up Medicaid rides and SCAT.
  • Make an appointment with the Office for the Aging advocate at your senior center.
  • Get you on the town repair list, or help you apply for a repair loan.

An advocate is covered by Medicare if you qualify. It takes two minutes to find out.
