Where do I apply for Medicaid in Huntington?

If you're 65 or older and don't need long-term care, you can apply online at NY State of Health, the state says. If you need care at home, apply on paper with DSS. There's no DSS center inside the town. The county's ZIP code lookup sends every Huntington ZIP code to the Smithtown Center in Hauppauge.

In 2026, the income limit for one person is $1,836 a month. New York doesn't count the first $20, so you can have up to $1,856, plus $33,038 in savings. The same form checks you for the Medicare Savings Program, which can pay the $202.90 a month Medicare costs you. See Medicare and Medicaid together in New York.

What does the Huntington Senior Center offer?

The Senior Center on Park Avenue serves Huntington residents 60 and older with classes, clubs, trips and help finding services. Hot lunch runs from noon to 1:15 p.m. on weekdays, for a suggested $3.00. Sign in between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and fill out a short form that you renew each April.

The town also has a Senior Beach House on Centerport Bay. If you're caring for someone with memory loss, ask about caregiver groups at 631-351-3253, ext. 3780.

How do I get meals or groceries at home in Huntington?

If you can't make your own meals, the town delivers five frozen meals each week to residents 60 and older. They come on Tuesday or Wednesday, or on Thursday, for a suggested $3.00 a meal (631-446-3783).

If shopping is the hard part, the town's Shopping Assistance Program can order online with you or shop for you. It doesn't pay for the food (631-351-3253).

How do I get a ride in Huntington?

Huntington is the only town in Suffolk County that runs its own buses, the town says. HART buses cost 75 cents if you're 60 or older, have a disability or show a Medicare card. Routes H20 and H30 stop at the Senior Center door.

HART paratransit is a van for people whose disability keeps them off the bus. Non-driving residents 60 and older who live too far from a bus route can ride too, with lower priority. Each one-way trip costs $4.00. Book one to 14 days ahead at 631-427-8287, Monday to Saturday.

Suffolk County Accessible Transportation (SCAT) doesn't serve trips that stay inside Huntington, but it serves trips that leave the town. With Medicaid, call MAS at 844-666-6270 at least three days before a routine visit. See Medicaid rides in New York.

What help at home can I get in Huntington?

At 60 and older, the Home Maintenance/Repair Program helps homeowners with small jobs. Workers put in grab bars and handrails, fix leaks and locks, and put in window air conditioners.

If you aren't on Medicaid but need help with cleaning or laundry, ask about EISEP. A county case manager decides what you get and your share of the cost. With Medicaid, call New York Medicaid Choice at 1-888-401-6582. See home care in New York.

The town's social adult day care is for someone who shouldn't be alone during the day. Call 631-351-3293 for a free tour, and members ride HART paratransit to it at no charge. See adult day care in New York.

How do I find affordable housing in Huntington?

The Huntington Housing Authority runs 573 Section 8 vouchers, the Gateway Gardens public housing complex and Millennium Hills in Melville. Its 2025 Section 8 and public housing waiting list is closed, the authority says. Call 631-427-6220 for updates. See housing help in New York.

Where can I get free food in Huntington?

Long Island Cares runs a pantry at 220 Broadway in Huntington Station, open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Island Harvest gives a free Senior Food Box each month if you're 60 or older with income up to $1,995 a month. Pickup sites in the town change each month, so check Island Harvest's calendar or call 631-873-4775. From October 1, 2026, people 60 and older who live alone can make up to $2,660 a month and get SNAP. See SNAP for seniors in New York.

What a Pair Team advocate does

In Huntington, a call to us often starts with a Medicaid letter and a HART form that's half filled in. Here's what we do:

  • Apply for Medicaid with you, then call the Smithtown Center until there's an answer.
  • Help you enroll in HART paratransit and book your first rides.
  • Sign you up for town meals at home or Shopping Assistance.
  • Set up an adult day care tour or a caregiver group for your family.

An advocate is covered by Medicare if you qualify. It takes two minutes to find out.
