Not sure you qualify? Apply anyway, because the county decides, and one Medi-Cal form also checks you for the Medicare Savings Programs. If you'd rather not do it alone, a Pair Team advocate can help you in one call.

How do I apply for Medi-Cal or CalFresh in Huntington Beach?

You can apply for Medi-Cal or CalFresh online at BenefitsCal.com or by phone at 1-800-281-9799. The county has no office in Huntington Beach, so the closest is the Garden Grove Regional Center at 12912 Brookhurst Street. It's open weekdays from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., the county says.

The same Medi-Cal form checks you for the Medicare Savings Programs. They can pay your copays and the $202.90 a month Medicare costs you in 2026, usually taken from your Social Security check. See Medicare and Medi-Cal together in California. For paid help at home, call the county's IHSS office at (714) 825-3000. Read more about IHSS in California.

Where can I get free Medicare counseling in Huntington Beach?

You can get free Medicare counseling from HICAP at the Senior Center in Central Park. Counselors are there on the first and third Friday of each month, from 9 a.m. to noon, the Council on Aging says. Call (714) 536-5600 to book a time.

Open Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7 each year, and HICAP holds a longer clinic at the center then. HICAP doesn't sell insurance, and Pair Team doesn't sell plans either. A change you make then starts January 1, Medicare.gov says.

What does the Senior Center in Central Park offer?

The Senior Center in Central Park offers classes, lunch, a gym and help to stay at home. It's open six days a week, the city says.

  • Lunch: Meals on Wheels Orange County serves lunch here. If you're 60 or older, the suggested donation is $3. Call (714) 375-8404 to register and check which days it runs, then arrive by 11:30 a.m.
  • Care managers: If you're 62 or older, a care manager can help with benefits, meals and what's hard at home. Call (714) 374-1572.
  • Meals at home: If you can't shop or cook, volunteers bring three meals each weekday. There may be a wait, so call (714) 374-1717 early.

How can older adults get rides in Huntington Beach?

Older adults can ride Seniors on the Go, the city's van service for residents 60 and older. It goes around town and to some medical offices nearby. Rides run weekdays from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with no fare, and the vans fit wheelchairs. Call (714) 374-1742 three to five days ahead, the city says.

If a disability keeps you off the bus, OC ACCESS van rides cost $3.60 each way in 2026, OCTA says. Call (714) 560-5956 to sign up. Medi-Cal plans also give rides to medical visits. See Medi-Cal rides in California.

It takes 30 to 35 percent off power and 20 percent off gas, the state says. See LIHEAP in California.

The city sends one bill for water, sewer and trash about every 30 days. A late bill can bring a fee and a shut-off date, the city says. If you can't pay, call Municipal Billing at (714) 536-5919 and press 9 on a weekday.

Can I get help with rent in Huntington Beach?

You can get rent help in Huntington Beach from the county and from groups the city funds. The city has no housing authority, so the Orange County Housing Authority runs Section 8 here, and its list is closed. If you're on it, call (714) 480-2740.

If late rent could cost you your home, Mercy House can pay this month's rent and up to five more months. It's for people with low income, the city says. Call (714) 836-7188, extension 175, and have your landlord's past-due notice ready. See housing help in California.

Where can I get free food in Huntington Beach?

For free groceries, go to the St. Bonaventure HOPE Office at 16410 Springdale Street. It's open weekdays from 10 to 11:15 a.m. and gives food, clothing and shoes once a month, the parish says. One Saturday a month, it also hands out a food box for people 60 and older with low income. Call (714) 846-3831. Monthly food money comes from CalFresh.

What a Pair Team advocate does

Here, a call to us about Medicare often turns into a ride to the doctor or meals at home. Your advocate makes the calls and follows up until there's an answer.

  • Help you sign up for Seniors on the Go and book your first ride.
  • Call the city's care managers or meal program with you.
  • Book a HICAP visit at the Senior Center in Central Park.
  • Help you apply for Medi-Cal, CalFresh or IHSS by phone, so you don't have to drive to Garden Grove.

An advocate is covered by Medicare if you qualify. It takes two minutes to find out.
